Tacoma, Washington

Travis Family at the community renaming celebration

Edna Travis Elementary

On August 21, 2023 Tacoma Public Schools officially changed the name of McCarver Elementary School to Edna Travis Elementary School. The change happened after a lengthy community process and unanimous vote in July by the Tacoma School Board to approve the name change.

McCarver was a figure from early Tacoma history who was known for policies that discriminated against Black people. In 2022, the community requested that the school be renamed after a local role model to better represent the neighborhood. After research and a community survey, an advisory committee recommended Dr. Edna E. Travis due to her positive impact in the Hilltop neighborhood.

Edna Travis Park

In October 2023, Tacoma Metro Parks renamed McCarver Park to Edna Travis Park, in coordination with Tacoma Public Schools’ renaming of the adjacent elementary school.
