Dr. Edna E. Travis was born in Mississippi on November 1, 1928 and came to the Pacific Northwest in 1948 as an army bride. While working various jobs, she raised and educated her three daughters and was always active in their school functions. She believed in being a participatory parent and worked on many of their school committees. Today, her daughters are professional women of God and serving in the ministry of the Lord.
Dr. Travis worked as a Licensed Professional Nurse and was also employed by the state of Washington for a short while. A devout believer in education, she earned several degrees:
She also holds a Pastoral Counselor’s License from the Tacoma Christian Council, with an emphasis in family practice, and has counseled many individuals throughout the city and state, nationally and worldwide. Because of her expertise in counseling and her prayers for families to be together, 13 families were reunited, of which some had been separated or divorced. Her desire is to always see families stay together because God has ordained marriage.
Dr. Travis was the Founder and Pastor of New Covenant Pentecostal Tabernacle in Tacoma, Washington. Members of New Covenant went on to found 30-plus ministries worldwide,
She was a devout intercessory prayer warrior who founded the United Interdenominational Full Gospel Prayer & Fellowship Association in 1987. She served as President of the Association until her homegoing in 2019.
Dr. Travis had a genuine love and concern for all people. Her outreach ministries included services at Ft. Lewis Evergreen Chapel; Jefferson Street Nursing Home; Purdy Treatment Center for Women; and until it was closed, McNeil Island State Penitentiary. The inmates looked forward to Dr. Travis and the members ministering to them.
For three years, Dr. Travis could be heard on KBLE and then KLAY 1480, known as the “Midnight Cry Messenger.” Dr. Travis reached out into the community and walked through every door the Lord opened for her to enter. She was often found visiting the sick and shut-in and ministering to their needs.
On March 4, 1985, Dr. Travis began a Feeding Program at New Covenant. This began with her bringing food she had prepared at home and feeding anyone that showed up hungry. The program grew to serve approximately 1,500-1,800 guests monthly (one evening meal a day, Monday through Friday). This program continues to exist to this day (Monday through Friday) and has been a blessing to the community needs.
An avid community activist, Dr. Travis was a member of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, Tacoma Urban League, and the YWCA, serving on the YWCA Board of Directors and Personnel Committee. She was the first “Elect Lady” of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Missionary Association under the leadership of the late Bishop E.F. Morris. She served as a vice-president and personnel officer of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Association headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Travis served for several years as the Superintendent of the United Interdenominational Holiness Academy of Excellence, grades preschool to third grade. She was the first woman vice-president of the Federated Pentecostal Church Intl., presiding Bishop R.E. Taylor.
